Dress and grooming codes are based upon certain sound foundations, not just arbitrarily selected and dictatorially enforced for no cause. Laws surrounding indecent exposure, conditions necessitating safety and personal well-being, health, and sanitation are some of the basic fundamentals. Conditions conducive to learning must not be impaired because of temporary and individual fads.
In order for students to be able to cope with even larger restrictions and responsibilities, they must learn while still in school to observe basic regulations set for the group as a whole. Keeping this total concept in mind and realizing a need to satisfy peer group desires for current fashion, the OSSD BOT will make an effort periodically to restructure the dress and grooming code according to current conditions. It is virtually impossible to write a regulation that will adequately cover every detail of appropriate conduct and dress. Therefore, it is necessary for the administrator to make judgments as to whether a student is properly dressed and/or is manifesting appropriate behavior so as to not cause a disruption or interference with school activities. We are attempting to eliminate as much confusion as possible so our attention can be turned to educational pursuits.
Modifications to the dress code may be allowed by school administrators for special occasions or other reasons deemed necessary by the administration.
Personal Appearance Regulations
- Shoes must be worn. Taps, cleats, wheels, and spikes on shoes will not be permitted except in appropriate settings.
- No excessively large, torn, or worn clothing will be permitted.
- No patches, emblems, or advertisements of a suggestive, indecent or obscene nature will be allowed.
- Shorts and skirts must be at least fingertip length. Slider shorts may be worn under shorts if they are not moderate length.
- Any exposing holes in pants or other lower-body garments may not have holes above the 4” inseam measurement.
- Halter tops, racerback shirts, spaghetti strap tops will not be permitted. Straps should be no less than 3’’ in width.
- Midriffs, cleavage, and backs will not be exposed.
- Appropriate underclothing will be worn.
- Any clothing tending toward immodesty in dress will be prohibited.
- Head coverings, caps, hats, headdress (including the hood of a shirt or sweatshirt), etc, will not be worn unless there has been prior approval from administration.
- Muscle shirts, basketball jerseys, and tank tops will not be permitted unless worn as a vest-type garment over a shirt. Pajamas/pajama pants and slippers are not permitted.
- Clothing, hats, caps, or other personal property which advertises or promotes the use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs shall be prohibited.
- Clothing, hats, caps, or other personal property which conveys obscene, lewd, or vulgar comments, messages, or portraits shall be prohibited.
- Clothing, hats, caps, or other personal property which portray sexual double entendre shall be prohibited.
- All pants, shorts, skirts, etc., shall be worn with the waistband or beltline around the waist and above the hips.
- Clothing, hats, caps, or other personal property which shall cause a disruption to the learning process or which serves as a hazard to the safety of students shall be prohibited.
- Anything not covered in the code that is distracting to either a teacher or student should be brought to the attention of the administration.
- For the safety and well-being of all students and staff, coats, jackets, windbreakers, vests, and other similar outer garments which extend below the knee in length shall be prohibited.
- Students shall not wear any attire which shall impinge upon the health, safety, and/or welfare of the students and employees within the district.
- Leggings, jeggings, and yoga pants may be worn as pants or primary cover.
