SY21 Schedule Updates
IMPORTANT SCHEDULE CHANGES IN OSSD
The OSSD Board of Trustees has approved important changes to the SY21 Academic Calendar and OSHS school day schedule, effective with the start of the second semester on January 5th, 2021.
THREE ADDITIONAL 60% DAYS ADDED TO SY21 CALENDAR
It has been brought to the attention of administration that there is a considerable strain on staff to meet all of the typical instructional requirements while making necessary adjustments to meet the needs of students, teaching in new platforms, and the virtual learning environment due to COVID-19. In November, a survey of the instructional staff was conducted to determine if adding 60% days to the academic calendar would be beneficial and alleviate some of the strain that is being imposed on teachers. The responses indicated the instructional staff would benefit from the addition of three 60% days. This would allow time for collaboration, adaptation, and planning time; therefore providing more effective lessons and instructional time for students.
The added 60% days are:
January 28th, 2021
April 21st, 2021
May 12th, 2021
The new changes are reflected on the SY21 Academic Calendar which can be found here.
OSHS TRANSITIONING TO HYBRID SCHEDULE ON JANUARY 5TH
The trajectory of the worsening COVID-19 cases in our area and their varied impacts on our ability to provide educational services to our students has continued to accelerate in recent days. High numbers of students being quarantined due to direct exposure of a confirmed positive case have put undue stress on the academic environment.
In order to achieve higher levels of physical distancing in our classrooms and decrease the current level of direct exposures and quarantines, the Ocean Springs Board of Trustees has approved the implementation of a hybrid schedule for Ocean Springs High School beginning January 5, 2021. All students will attend class every day, either in person or virtually based on the approved schedule. Students must attend class virtually in the same manner as they are required to do so in-person with all attendance requirements being in effect. This change will not result in any changes to schedules for students in grade PK-8, it is only for students attending Ocean Springs High School.
Students with the last name of A-J (Team Blue) will attend school in person on the A Day Schedule and virtually on the B Day Schedule.
Students with the last name of K-Z (Team Grey) will attend school in person on the B Day Schedule and virtually on the A Day Schedule.
A full schedule can be downloaded by clicking here.
*Students who currently participate in the Greyhound Virtual Academy will have the opportunity to continue to attend school in this manner. Families must continue to apply for the GVA every nine weeks and successfully complete all academic and attendance requirements.
*Specific IDEA students (self-contained classes) and those identified as at-risk by our instructional staff will be required to attend school in person on a daily basis.
OSHS Bell Schedule (Effective: 1/5/2021)
*Athletic blocks and practices will continue on a daily basis with all mitigation strategies implemented as prescribed.
International Baccalaureate Program Schedule
The IB schedule currently runs most classes on an A/B schedule year long. In the hybrid schedule, the IB program will continue the A/B schedule utilizing shorter time segments per day and synchronous learning to achieve the required amount of minutes per two week period.
Dual Credit Classes
Dual credit courses are not impacted by the schedule change and will continue to attend class based on the schedule provided by the college provider.
The Office of Child Nutrition will offer Grab and Go breakfast and lunch meals FREE for all students to take home for virtual days. Students will be able to pick up these meals by the high school cafeteria on the day they are on campus. For more information, contact Child Nutrition at (228) 875-2880.
Transition from Hybrid Learning back to the Full Traditional Schedule at OSHSIn order to maintain instructional continuity, we will review the need for continuation of the hybrid format prior to the end of the third nine weeks in order to make a recommendation to the BOT for the OSHS schedule for the fourth nine weeks.
